Case Study: Vehicles for Change and VR: Rebuilding Lives Through Auto Mechanic Training

How a nonprofit is using Meta Quest to upskill returning citizens and reduce recidivism—faster, safer, and at scale.

Vehicles for Change (VFC) believes a second chance can start with a wrench—and a headset. The Maryland-based nonprofit is bringing virtual reality into its auto mechanic training program to help formerly incarcerated individuals build job-ready skills without the cost, risk, or barriers of traditional classroom learning.

“This is a great tool that offers hands-on training without the expense, without the danger, without any outside issues.”
Martin Schwartz, President & Founder, Vehicles for Change

🚧 The Challenge: Training That Was Too Costly to Scale

VFC trains more than 100 auto mechanics per year, many of them returning citizens. But traditional training—performed on physical vehicles in high-ceiling garages with live instructors—is expensive and resource-heavy.

Key roadblocks:

  • 🧑‍🏫 Limited instructors for one-on-one guidance

  • 🏗️ Facility & equipment constraints (vehicles, lifts, tools)

  • ⚠️ Inherent safety risks during live practice

  • 💰 $18,000 per student—over $2M/year to operate

  • 🕒 4 to 9 months required to complete traditional training

To scale their program, reduce costs, and prepare more students faster, VFC turned to immersive technology.

🎧 Why Meta Quest?

VFC adopted Meta Quest 2 for its:

  • ✅ Affordability & enterprise-grade performance

  • ✅ Wireless portability for facility use or field deployment

  • ✅ High-resolution visuals ideal for technical instruction

  • ✅ Simple user interface for first-time learners

They deployed 100+ headsets, backed by custom-built software to simulate the mechanic's world in vivid detail.

🛠️ The Solution: A Virtual Garage, Powered by EMPACT

Partnering with HTX Labs and the EMPACT Immersive Training Platform, VFC created a virtual training environment that mirrors a real mechanic's bay—with a vehicle, a lift, and full toolkit.

📦 Key training features:

  • Interactive step-by-step repairs (e.g., oil changes, diagnostics)

  • Color-coded progress tracking (pass/fail for each task)

  • Assessment mode for independent task execution

  • Virtual instructor guides built-in, mimicking real-world training

  • Practice-as-you-go format—repeat skills until mastered

“Our students can learn in a risk-free, repeatable environment. It’s hands-on, without the hazards.”

✅ Results That Matter (and Growing)

While the program is still early, the outcomes are encouraging:

  • 🚗 First graduates already hired within days of completing training

  • 🔁 Recidivism dropped significantly among San Diego pilot group

  • 💡 Empowering students to train faster, safer, and more affordably

  • 📈 Laying the groundwork to help address the 67,000+ mechanic openings projected each year across the U.S.

“For us, the opportunity to reduce recidivism across the country is really key.”
Martin Schwartz, Vehicles for Change
